Aug. 26, 2010 This week in LiveWire: Chilean miners | China's Cultural Revolution | Justin Bieber | U.S. Open graphics Rescuing the Chilean miners Thirty-three miners have been trapped for days in a Chilean mine and may not be rescued for months. MCT Graphics has posted a map locating the mine, a cutaway of the mine showing where the miners are trapped and an explanation of "palomas," the long metal tubes filled with supplies that are being lowered to the miners through a shaft. Questions: E-mail MCT Graphics Director Wes Albers. TopChina's silence on a violent period in its past The Cultural Revolution in China left millions dead, injured or mentally broken. From 1966 to 1976, the nation was gripped in violence and chaos, after Mao Zedong fanned the flames of the Cultural Revolution out of fears that the government was growing too moderate. Decades later, there still has never been a complete public accounting about what happened. Chinese official histories acknowledge that the period was bloody and chaotic, but they give little detail about what happened, especially when it comes to individual murders. McClatchy Newspapers correspondent Tom Lasseter reports. The story and photos are available on MCT International.
