BIG ADVENTURE: CLIMB EVEREST

The last outpost: Woman in charge of the highest-altitude emergency room in the world

AV-EVERESTEMERGENCY:MCT—In 2003 the establishment of the EBC Clinic by Dr. Freer, a Bozeman, Montana, emergency care physician, came with a lot of skepticism. “That skepticism,” says David Morton, Alpine Ascents Mount Everest guide, “is something that goes with the whole world of climbing. There’s always curiosity about people’s backgrounds, and the majority of climbers feel that most doctors lack the knowledge base on high-altitude issues because they don’t spend the time on the mountain. Luanne’s limited climbing background was initially a source of doubt.”

Dr. Freer may not have “extreme climber” on her résumé, but she’s absolutely earned her stripes within this elite climbing community. “Yes, I felt the suspicion,” she says. “And even though my crampons may not take me above 22,000 feet, showing up year after year with a heartfelt purpose and determination is a proven way to ingratiate oneself into a tough group.” David notes that during the past six years Dr. Freer has overcome the naysayers through the strength of her personality, her clinic’s lifesaving track record, and her passion for the Sherpa and Nepali people.

SKI

Downhill economics spark big deals in ski country

AV-CHEAPSKI:MI—The economy may be sputtering, but there’s a silver lining in mountain country: better bargains for skiers.

“There are so many deals now, more than we normally see,” said Dan Sherman of www.ski.com, one of the largest sellers of ski packages. “It’s a great opportunity for travelers.”

Late fall is always when the best ski deals are offered, “but this year there are even more than usual,” Sherman said.

New incentives are coming in many forms—later book-by dates, free days of skiing, free spa services, added values, resort credits.

Skiers and snowboarders can do a little fantasizing by climbing into the Whistler-Blackcomb Resort’s Peak 2 Peak Gondola.

The gondola, which makes its winter operation debut Dec. 12, is part of a massive expansion the two resorts are undergoing in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

SKATE

Trails of ice: Backcountry skaters glide through the wilderness

AV-BACKCOUNTRYSKATE:AC—Backcountry skaters Jim Renkert and Bob Butera were poking around looking for some promising ice when they stumbled upon a jackpot.

Renkert and Butera were exploring the Rabbit Creek Slough, Alaska. They found excellent ice until a couple of miles from the public access point where Rabbit Slough becomes tidally influenced. Silt from below the tidal high water line had blown onto the ice in places, slowing progress. They considered turning around.

That’s when they spotted a duck shack in the distance. Let’s go at least that far, the skaters decided.
